Program: John Jeandrevin serves on the
advisory board for the Medina branch of the Salvation Army and tonight’s
program was held at the Medina Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army is a branch of the Chritian Church which is organized
and operated in military fashion. The
Salvation Army serves people in 102 countries and is motivated by a love for God
and a concern for the needs of all humanity.
Captain Armida LaMarr and Captian Kristin See taught us about the various
programs that are available in Medina. Project
Munch is the most recognized program by the citizens of Medina.
Munch stands for Medina United Neighbors Combatting Hunger.
This program was started by the community and then later the Salvation
Army took it over. This Project
serves meals to those in need the last full week (every night) of each month.
They offer many services to the children and youth:
In the
summer there is a summer gym program available 2 days a week where children can
come to play, have lunch and have a “Sunday School” lesson.
On Tuesday
nights there is Kids Club. The
children are working on a Christmas Program currently.
The boys and girls each have separate classes where they learn about
something new and then they also have snack and a “Sunday School” lesson.
Friday
nights there is a Teen Scene at the facility from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m.
This offers a safe place for teens to hang out, play ball and play other
games. Normally about 40 teens
attend.
Also
available are Home League for Women and Men’s club which are church fellowship
groups.
Additionally,
there are many social services available such as Emergency Housing, Rent
Assistance, Prescriptions, Utilites (Ohio Edison’s Program is Project Reach
which helps those who have a disconnect notice.
Ohio Edison sets the amounts available). People who need these servcies can visit the Social Worker
from 9 – 4 daily.
The League
of Mercy is a program that vists 10 area nursing homes.
They give the residents the War Cry Magazine as well as gifts and cards
for the holidays. They also visit
area prisons.
The
Christmas Basket Program provides food for 1 week and toys for the children of
families in need. The families must
sign up this year on November 19th and 20th at the
Salvation Army and meet with a social worker.
There is a
new project currently being set up. The
Salvation Army will furnish room for a group of physicians for a non-profit
medical clinic. They hope to have
this up and running in the next 6 months.
A good portion of the budget for the
Salvation Army comes from the Red Kettle Campaign at Christmas.
This year the kettles will be at 6 locations in Medina.
The goal is to raise $31,000. As
always, the Medina Rotary will be helping with this.
A sign up sheet is circulating for times.
