the District Governor, Dr. Timothy Wright, addressed our group.
Tim started out reminding us that their job is to keep us informed and
inspired about matters important to us and the operation of our clubs.
Tim is trying to make significant changes at the district to more of a
“club focus”. They are
attempting to turn the old authoritative organizational triangle upside down.
Rotary International must get back to what made Rotary great – each
individual club performing at their best.
We learned more about the history of Rotary. Rotary is the oldest, largest, most international and most
admired and emulated service club. It
is the largest non-religious, non-political organization on earth.
Throughout the world, especially in Europe and Asia, to be a Rotarian is
something very, very special.
He asked each of us to consider the questions of “Why are we Rotarians?”
and “What are we going to do?” Rotarians
are good people doing good things and enjoying each other in the process.
Rotarians like to FEEL they are making a difference, and FEEL GOOD about
Rotary.
Which Rotary club do we belong to? The
club of sterling reputation, admiration, that is recognized worldwide in its
significance. Or is it the club of
organization and structure, with many resources to use?
Perhaps it is the club of caring-that very big heart, of providing
service to our club, vocation, community or global community.
Do we belong to the club of returns on investment or our time and
resources? Perhaps our club is the club of fellowship, friendship and
acquaintance, where fun and relationships are paramount.
Perhaps it is all of them.
Tim has come to the conclusion that if they want to be effective at District
they must find out what Rotarians want from the District, find out what
Rotarians think is important, and provide information and events in line with
those interests. The district must
be a symbol of what Rotarians hold dear, and what keeps us coming back, and that
fellowship of their Rotary club and the desire to do good things for others,
here and throughout the world.
**For
complete notes on Tim’s talk, please ask someone who was at the meeting.
Club
Asssembly:
Vocational Service: Darlene
Wredberg has made posters for the 4-way Speech Contest to be put up at the
schools. The contest will be on
3/27/03 and the District contest is on 4/12/03.
(Darlene needs someone to take the winner to the contest as she is
already committed that day) The
Scholarship Application will be reviewed to include some questions that will
help the judges know the applicants better.
It is also suggested that the students submit their grades and a letter
of recommendation along with their application. There is an off-site visit on March 20th for a
Scholarship Benefit Show at the Vocational Center. More details to follow.
Club Service: Ben
Hallock explained that their main concern currently is helping with the
membership drive and the upcoming Open House.
***Don Rossman has donated 2 free
tickets to the Cavs vs the Phillies on 2/21/03 for the member who brings the
most guests to the open house*** Thanks
Don!
International Service: Kevin
Wermer expressed his feeling that our club should do more to help the Polio Plus
program and offered suggestions such as advertising in the newspaper or getting
contributions from the medical community. The
International Exchange from Egypt will be here in April and the outbound team is
ready to go to the Phillipines once travel safety is determined.
The student exchange is going well.
The students say they not only learn about our country while they are
here, but also learn about all the countries where the other students in the
district come from.
Community
Service: Ken Tender explained
that a third pavilion is being proposed to be built.
Three or four sites have been suggested, but we may build outside of
Medina. The expense should be about
$4,500 including the tables. John
Sobotincic has agreed to co-chair the project.
There is also a proposal to name one of the city parks “Medina Rotary
Park”. We will participate in the
Adopt-a-Highway program again this year as we are a Gold Star Club.
A chairperson is needed for the Citizen of the Year project.
This year they are planning to bring back the Uptown Park Spring Clean-up
and Planting. Darlene plans on
getting us some teens to help. This
is the 50th anniversary for Camp Paradise. Every year we pitch in to do some clean-up and painting.
They have an annual meeting on May 18th and would like it
ready by then. The caboose also
needs some repair and painting which John Sobotincic has agreed to look into.
