Benefit Golf Outing:  This year’s Golf Outing will be held on June 16th at Fox Meadows.  The cost is $140 to participate and it will be a scramble format.  The committee is now planning and working hard.  Ask Linda Radencic what you can do to help.

Board of Directors Elections

The term of office for Board members Linda Radencic, Kevin Wermer and Mark Farnham will be expiring on June 30, 2003.  We will have our Board of Directors election at the May 29th meeting.  Between now and then, please give any Board nominations to an officer of the Club.  Keep in mind:  past Board members are eligible to be re-elected.  Board members whose terms of office are expiring are also eligible to be re-elected, but some Club members prefer to contribute in ways other than serving on the Board.  It is important that before you nominate someone you ask them if they would be interested and able to participate this way.

Chief Chopper Award:  Each year the Medina Rotary Club selects from it's membership the Rotarian who has contributed the most during the past year and recognizes that individual with the Chief Chopper Award.   This is our MVP award.

Members must be present on June 5th to vote for both these items.  Please get nominations to Ron Quine or Rich Bidinger as soon as possible.

2003 Rotary Scholarship Recipients:  In 1987, Rotary International redefined the Vocational Avenue of Service to adopt a new focus toward fostering and support of the ideals of service in pursuit of all vocations.

Tonight we were honored to help four area students continue in their pursuit of academic achievement and career goals.  We have many young people in our community that achieve high standards in their education as well as uphold and practice Rotary’s belief in serving our community.

The Jim McClintock Scholarship was awarded to Edgar Wilson from Highland High School.  Edgar is a familiar face to us as he works at Rustic Hills as a server.  Besides keeping up his excellent scholastic record, Edgar has also been active in Student Council, National Honor Society, VOFT, the American Red Cross and Drew’s Crew.  Edgar plans to attend Case Western Reserve University and major in Engineering Physics.

The Chic York Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Emma Free from Medina High School.  Emma recently received a phone call that she would not be going to The New Mexico Military Institute, but instead should report directly to West Point.  She hopes to become an officer in the U.S. Army and specialize in Chemical and Biological Warfare.  Emma has been involved in Drama, Latin Club, Girl’s Leaders, Shakespeare Club, Voft and 4H.  She has logged over 600 hours of volunteerism during her high school years.

The Don Tubbs Scholarship was awarded to Laura Hovenac from Buckeye High School.  Laura will apply her scholarship to attending Miami University where she will study Anthropology and Archeology.  She hopes to become a museum curator or professor.  Laura has kept busy with Spanish Club, student government, mock trial, Academic Challenge Teams, National Honor Society and SADD.  She is also an avid saxophonist and has played in the marching, jazz and honors band as well as the Medina Symphony Orchestra.

The Harold Friedt Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Angela Smith from the Medina County Career Center.  Angela plans on attending Miami University to major in English and French Education.  She hopes sto study French abroad and become a high school teacher.  Angela’s activities include French club, Ski Club, Key Club, Student Councilo, National Honor Society, Orchestra member (9 years) and Symphony Orchestra (2 years).

CONGRATULATIONS TO THESE EXCEPTIONAL YOUNG PEOPLE!!!

GSE:   Tonight we also had the pleasure of meeting GSE Team from RI District 2450; Alexandria, Egypt.  The team included the Leader Mamdouh Abdel Ghaffar, Heba Said Bekhit, Merit V. Fanous, Nezar Abou-Ismail and Shereen Shaker Abdalla.  Each member of the team shared with us about their life in Egypt.  It was truly enjoyable.
