February 2

7, 2003

Invocation:  Given by Darrell Jenkins

News at 7:11:  It was a good day for business with the Dow, Nasdaq & S&P all rising.  The United States lowered the terror alert to “yellow”; Saddam Hussein is moving his northern most Republican Guard south; the nightclub fire death toll was lowered by 1; President Bush offers no assurances to Afganistan that an Iraq war would not hinder the Afgan recovery; Mr. Rogers dies at age 74; Angular tower chosen for the WTC site is 1776 feet high; Emmitt Smith was released by the Cowboys.

Guests:  Sonny Kanieski and student Vincent Philippart

Sergeant @ Arms:  Don Rossman collected dollars tonight for the Cavs win, American Cancer Society Daffodils sale (see John S. for details), missing the upcoming Auction, seeing Darrell Jenkins back, Auction for the City of Akron, the Club’s Auction, first time seeing the new cabinet, the Directory pictures that Sonny is taking, the updated sheets for the new directory (if you haven’t turned yours in, PLEASE get it to Darlene ASAP), Darlene’s son’s 6th birthday, the half way decent weather, the good of the order, contacting people to attend the auction, missed meetings, pressure to give a dollar, a week in the Dominican Republic, Jim McClintock’s 100th birthday, a week in New York during a snow storm, Jim Hunter returning, the United Airlines paychecks not bouncing…yet, Iverson’s great night on Friday, Darrell and Joan Jenkin’s 47th anniversay, car repair in N. Carolina, Jochen who is ill with the flu, a trip to Hawaii, the front table being in the drk, Joan Jenkins doing well and expected to be on her feet in one month, the Indians, the Cavs to lose and get a draft pick, Ron’s bad week that he survived, 6 more inches of snow so Rich B. can tell his grandchildren he shoveled snow in the worst winter ever.

President’s Message:  The Rotary Benefit Auction for 2003 will be over by the time you read this.  We need to immediately begin working on the Rotary Benefit Golf Outing.  The Sunrise Club recently completed their Wine & Roses Dinner.  The event raised about $29,000.  They did an excellent job.  The entire Club was committed to the event.  Jay Vigneault had a golf outing to raise money for research into the disease that killed his brother.  It was done in late summer-early fall, in conjunction with the Hospital.  It raised over $12,000.  He and his help were committed.  The success of our Benefit Golf Outing will depend on how committed our Club is to the event.

The Chairpersons for this event are Linda Radencic and Don Rossman.  Please don’t wait for them to ask for your help.  Please go to them, call on them or e-mail them and ask what you can do to be part of this event.  There are plenty of ways for everyone to participate.

Citizen of the Year:  Cinzia Rolling has accepted the responsibility of overseeing this years contest.  Nomination Forms are still available.
