NAMI was created over 20 years ago and has over 1200 chapters in the U.S.
and Canada. There are no paid
employees; every person is a volunteer. There
is no funding from the United Way or any government body; all funding comes from
membership and grants.
NAMI’s mission is to improve the quality of life, ensure dignity and
respect for persons with serious mental illness, and offer support to their
families.
Mental illnesses are due to neurological brain disorders that interfere with
normal brian chemistry. These
disorders cannot go away but can be treated.
2.8% of the U.S. population is affected by serious brain disorders.
That is equal to over 300,000 people in Ohio and 4,200 in Medina County.
Every 15 minutes someone commits suicide and every day 5 of them are
children.
For Medina County, all education and support groups meet at the Medina
Hospital. Education is free.
An Advocay Manual is available which lists over 80 sources for services
and benefits in Medina County. Free
programs include Family-to-Family and Hand-to-Hand.
These both provide basic information and skill training
for parents, family members and friends who cope with the daily issues
involved when a loved one has a brain disorder.
Other programs are available for clergy and law enforcement officers.
NAMI’s Vision for the future includes 1) Eliminating insurance parody for
discrimination against mental illness/brain disorders [House bill 33 introduced in OH to prohibit discrimination for treatment
of Mental Illness and Substance Abuse]; 2) 24/7 psychiatric care in Medina
County; 3) Medina County to adopt a Mental Health Court; 4) Stigma will no
longer be attached to the mentally ill; 5) The day the citizens of Medina County
will have a 24/7 crisis housing facility for the mentally ill; 6) President
Bush’s commission will honor the pledge to the mentally ill that all are
created equal.
Dick recommended the book:
“The Day the Voices Stopped” by Ken Steele.
