Benefit Golf Outing:  This year’s Golf Outing will be held on June 16th at Fox Meadows.  The cost is $140 to participate and it will be a scramble format.  The committee is now planning and working hard.  Ask Linda Radencic what you can do to help.  There will be a golf meeting at 5:30 before the meeting on May 29th.

Medina Square Clean Up:  On May 17th Brian Feron, Roy Harriger, Bill Hauck, John Sobotincic and Ken Tender worked from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the Medina Square.  The Square now looks beautiful and well groomed once again.  Eighteen cubic yards of mulch were unloaded and moved by wheelbarrow to be spread around every tree, bush, the Gazebo, etc.  In addition, many weeds were pulled and bushes trimmed.  The sidewalks were edged and blown clean.  The “Jewel” of Medina is nmow dressed up and ready for many summer programs.

Camp Paradise Clean Up:  On May 17th Bill Breck, his son Alexander, Karen Gayner, Jane Lang, Kristin See, Tammy Korylko, Hall Cary and Dayne Wendling worked from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Camp Paradise.  Our Rotarians dressed up all three high priority areas as requested.  They pulled weeds and trimmed bushes at the entrance, weeded and planted flowers around the Natatorium, and weeded and planted flowers in front of the office complex and flagpole.  Feedback from Camp Paradise is that the area looks beautiful and was in great condition for their Annual Meeting and 50th Anniversary Celebration.

A special thanks from Ken Tender to all those who participated on May 17th and got the job done.

Board of Directors Elections

The term of office for Board members Linda Radencic, Kevin Wermer and Mark Farnham will be expiring on June 30, 2003.  We will have our Board of Directors election at the May 29th meeting.  Between now and then, please give any Board nominations to an officer of the Club.  Keep in mind:  past Board members are eligible to be re-elected.  Board members whose terms of office are expiring are also eligible to be re-elected, but some Club members prefer to contribute in ways other than serving on the Board.  It is important that before you nominate someone you ask them if they would be interested and able to participate this way.

Chief Chopper Award:  Each year the Medina Rotary Club selects from it's membership the Rotarian who has contributed the most during the past year and recognizes that individual with the Chief Chopper Award.   This is our MVP award.

Members must be present on June 5th to vote for both these items.  Please get nominations to Ron Quine or Rich Bidinger as soon as possible.

Program:  Tonight’s program was presented by Bernie Greenberg.  Bernie is a Rotarian from the Elyria Club and is a psychologist.  In 1999 Bernie was hit by a truck while crossing the street and suffered a severe closed brain injury.  Bernie educated us about brain injuries and shared his struggles and triumphs with us.

Bernie returned to work 5 ½ months after his injury.  The thought of returning to work had motivated him.  Yet, after a while his frustration grew because he could not do what he was used to.  He eventually returned home after trying several jobs and decided to concentrate on learning more about brain injuries.  He had his biggest gain in the first 6 months and then more progress in the next year.  Now the gains are very slow.

Sometimes Bernie gets fuzzy and empty-headed, and he tends to withdraw and get grumpy.  He experiences memory lapses and loses his physical balance.  He often becomes physically chilled and cannot articulate what he is thinking.  Bernie has double vision and must wear special glasses.  He can only use one eye at a time; one to see far and one to see up close.  When his symptoms get bad, he feels fearful and worrisome.

Other times, Bernie has a great memory and things are very clear.  He can plan things well and is now a better listener.  He is very good at linking resources together, is talkative, energetic and interesting.  He can combine unusual ideas to create new thoughts for himself.  He has become a productive person.  (He even discovered Classical Music)

Bernie has good days and bad days.  He refers to them as his “Brainstorms”.  When he changes from one mode to the other, it happens quickly and is very widespread.  The periods tend to last a long time and why they switch is a mystery.  At times it takes tremendous effort to do simple tasks that most of us take for granted.  This also takes a lot of energy.  Bernie was happy to report that he believes he has more positive brainstorms now than negative.

He has dealt with his injury by using his principles of passion, measuring his progress, being persistent, always preparing, being patient (which does not come naturally) and using propulsion (others pulling and pushing him).

Bernie was a amazing person to listen to and an inspiration to us all!!

THE FOUR WAY TEST

“Of the things we think, say or do:

First - Is it the Truth?

Second - Is it Fair to all Concerned?

Third - Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships?

Fourth - Will it be Benefitical to all Concerned
